BASICS OF WEAVING (27/02/2017)

THE STORY

My name is Milena and I am a weaver.
I went to the local art school where I became a weaving enthusiast; after that I explored the beautiful art at the weaving school in Florence with mrs Guidotti, who mastered it.
Then I travelled a lot through Latin America, where weaving is daily routine and a big part of the local culture, learning the techniques of the typical local craftsmanship that I've assimilated by mixing them with the traditional ones of my region.
I like weaving natural fibers, such as wool of our indigenous sheep (the Lamon) and the other three Venetian kinds (Alpagota, Brogna and Foza) and also with vegetable fibers such as linen and hemp.
I'm a member of the "Fea de Lamon", an association which works in the recovery of our typical sheep breed, that was almost in danger of extinction.
I live in Lamon, a beautiful village in the middle of the Belluno Dolomites well known for its typical bean production, there I've an open workshop, where I teach basic weaving courses (using looms with 4 heddles).
I'm looking forward to introducing you to the beauties of my work and of my still authentic, simple and welcoming land.

WORKSHOP

BASICS OF WEAVING

Milena, weaving

210

Basic weaving course with a 4-heald loom. In my workshop I will teach you the use of the loom and provide you with locally produced pure wool yarn from native Lamon sheep. It will be 12 hours divided into one day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.) with a lunch break and on the second day 4 hours in the morning (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). I'll start explaining how the loom works, and after that I will show you the preparation of the warp (and you'll do the same on your loom) and finally we'll settle the various threads of the same warp on the loom. At this point we'll be ready to start with the weaving itself. You will also learn how to solve the different problems that weaving can present. You will produce a beautiful handmade fabric that you can take home! Lamon is a very nice mountain place where you can relax taking beautiful walks, so if the village will be too far to reach in one day, there will be the possibility to rely on a local hotel at a convenient price.
