DIEGO, BLACKSMITH

THE ART OF WROUGHT IRON (07 Nov 17)

This was a great experience. I arrived in Monteleone di Spoleto, a medieval town in the mountains with fantastic views and ancient treasures. I met Diego and Matteo, his trusted translator and exchange friendly greetings. We drove a short distance outside the town to the family workshop where I was introduced to the father Pietro, a master of his trade of blacksmithing. After meeting the family dog and his brother Roberto, we started right away planning our day and the piece to be made. We decided on a carving knife and a two prong fork. Diego quickly sketch the knife and fired up the kiln. With the skillful hands of Diego, help from Roberto and a lot of my sweat, the iron bar was taking shape. At midday, I was invited to a local agriturismo for an amazing lunch of grilled meat, pasta, cheese and vine. With the hard work ahead, we needed some protein! By the end of the day, we had produce a beautifully crafted knife and fork. Thank you Diego for this totally awesome day and I would certainly recommend anyone to experience his art. Thank you to Pietro for his hospitality, Roberto for his help and Metteo for keeping the communication ongoing and to all for teaching me a few more Italian words. Arrivederci i miei amici.
