We are Bianca and Giovanna and we care about restoring everything that is connected to paper. It’s been four years now that we are working together, and our main effort is in offering accurate restoration of ancient volumes. We are both from Turin but our partnership was born in Venice in front of a spritz during a break from a business seminar. We are lucky enough to live in a magical world of ancient papers: we take care of each book that is entrusted to us, we give them a new usability through an accurate restoration of the object that involves structural and chromatic interventions in order to let it valuable again. Our passion leads us to consider every book like a unique and rare example. We also love to take some paper or cardboard deteriorated objects from time to time, and give them their original function by studying the most suitable solution for each case. Beside the general restoration activities we also create original bindings, unique and personalized items, cards that we hand-paint with traditional techniques: from traditional and Japanese paper marbling (sumi-nagashi) to glue cards obtained with spatula or sponge. All our work is strictly carried out by hand, using excellent materials that are suitable for a long lasting preservation.

We enjoyed a delightful session with Bianca, who taught us increasingly complex (but still accessible to beginners) methods of creating art from floating ink. She is clearly very passionate and expert about the subject, having written a book (in Italian) on it. We had a great time and recommend to all!

Sabato 16/10 mia figlia Manuela ha partecipato al workshop di Giovanna della Legatoria Littera Antiqua . Bellissima esperienza ...Manuela è stata seguita per due ore da Giovanna che le ha insegnato a creare cartoncini unici e speciali partendo dalla polpa di cellulosa. Ha potuto mettere in pasta le mani e vedere con i suoi occhi come da quella poltiglia si poteva ricreare qualcosa di unico e originale. Ha poi imparato a colorare quei cartoncini con tecniche diverse. In due ore ha creato ben 12 cartoncini che andremo a ritirare in settimana appena saranno asciutti. Esperienza meravigliosa e grazie agli interessi comuni con Giovanna, Manuela è tornata a casa con un bagaglio molto ricco di spunti da poter utilizzare. La mia piccola artista in erba è soddisfatta e ringrazia tutti per la stupenda accoglienza. Ah parteciperemo ad altri futuri workshop perché ormai Manuela é stata rapita da questo mondo. The workshop of Bianca was amazing! In the city center of Torino Giovanna and Bianca build up a wonderfull place of paper art. They can tell you anything about marbled paper, paper making and paper art.
I could spend a year in this cartiera but unfortunately I booked a short workshop so there wasn't much time. When I am back in torino I definitly will do another workshop! |

Book page interventions and stitching. A series of hands-on classes to be able to intervene on books in your home library with basic conservation intervention techniques. If, like us, you have an unbridled passion for paper and books and want to discover the fascination of a craft that allows you to keep alive the precious paper heritage that is in danger of being lost, this workshop is for you! We will start with some theory to learn about the basics of paper conservation, the materials, tools used, and some interesting case studies. You will discover the first and most important operations for the preservation of book materials: dusting and degumming, which is followed by disassembling and unstapling the book. You will then learn how to restore pages that are torn or have missing parts using Japanese paper and veil. Finally, you will do the stitching of the fascicles and the restoration of a paperback (light cardstock) cover.
