FROM PRIMITIVE TO ROMAN POTTERY (15/09/2022)

I highly recommend Elisabetta.

She is very knowledgeable about traditional methods of making ceramics and the history of ceramics.
I was impressed with her preparation for our workshop. She went to great length to find the right clay unique to the area. She provided a wealth of materials to use when it came time to make and decorate our various ceramic objects. The setting for our workshop was a garden dedicated to preserving the flora and flowers of the area. I really appreciate the effort she made to incorporate the local culture in our workshop.
Elisabetta is very professional, detail-oriented. Her explanations are clear and thorough. She is very patient, encouraging and sensitive to the needs of her students.
I was thrilled with my workshop. It exceeded my expectations.

THE STORY

I'm Elisabetta and I'm 52 years old. I'm a polyhedral artist of Venetian origin. I've permanently been living in the “Penisola Sorrentina” for 30 years. I've attended the School of Art in Venice (specifically in goldsmithing) continuing with the Fine Arts Academy (sculpture) in Naples. My artisan story begins with attendance at various ateliers. Painting, sculpture, Neapolitan art of the XVIII century of the nativity scene, goldsmithing, wax sculpture, pottery, papier-maché. I then finally opened my own atelier in the picturesque inner city of Sorrento.
Nowadays my atelier is in the nature, open-air, surrounded by the beauty of our peninsula. It's located in between the two sides of the Amalfitana and Sorrentina coastlines, in between two amazing gulfs, in front of the Isle of Capri. My job is inspired by my passion towards a simple material as clay and its manufacturing during time.
Careful and passionate researches to the discovery of ancient craftsman techniques, gave me the chance to acquire a great experience. I see myself in the nature of these luxuriant places. I let myself get carried away by their beauty. I imagine myself immersed in timeless ages, at the very beginning. At that time when our artisans were actually working in the nature, taking care of it and respecting it, with a deep interior communication, walking through the scenic paths and the archeological sites found in those places imbued with history.
I use the resources that the nature offers me, picking up various soils, working them with spring water. I shape small jewels and extraordinary vases created without the help of modern tools. I simply use the ones that the nature gives me (a little shell, leaves, seeds, rocks, etc.). Then comes the magic of firing, that seals my work, at the sunset. I light up a wood fire in a hole dug into the ground. At the sunrise, finally, the artworks painted by fire wildly emerge among the ashes.

EXPERIENCES WITH ELISABETTA

WORKSHOP

THE SECRET COLORS OF LANDS

Elisabetta, sculptress

With this experience I'm offering an evocative journey through the ages. I'll show you the manufacturing of soils and of their colors. I'll tell you and I'll let you try, manually, the fascinating working technique used by the potters of the Roman times. They were considered as great artists, so much that their artworks were valued as gold! I'll guide you through the handmade creation of small jewels and other objects of your choice. You can bring them with you, or better, I'll send them to you once they are fired. Through this workshop you'll find out the connections of our territory with the ancient past. This is in fact characterized by the population of “Stabiae” (the current Castellammare di Stabia), which was the favorite “holiday destination” of patricians. If weather permits, we'll work open air with a panoramic view on the Naples Gulf, with the majestic Vesuvio in front of us.

CLAY AND NATURE IN POSITANO

Immersed in the luxuriant and wild nature that this territory still offers in abundance. Along the hills cordillera of the Peninsula, going down towards the breath-taking coasts. There where at sunrise and sunset you can spot dolphins jumping through the waves. Among so much beauty, we'll find the inspiration, in its harmonious geometries and in the perfume of its colors. We'll create objects by using clay gathered exactly in these places. We'll immerse ourselves in moments where the nature will create with us, filling ourselves with its most luxuriant expression. We'll shape our precious artworks in an upland in front of a 360° view. We'll decorate by observing the geometry of a leaf or using the streaked surface of a shell found on the cliffs. Listening the symphony of the breeze among the branches in a little clearing. In the evening we'll fire our objects relaxing ourselves around the fire. This creative path will occur at the “Rifugio La Selva” in Positano. It's an evocative place with the slopes of Montepertuso behind his back. The perfect location for this workshop that will accompany us for a full day.

WORKSHOP

FROM PRIMITIVE TO ROMAN POTTERY

In this experience I propose an evocative journey through the centuries, on the working of the land and its colors. I will tell you about and let you try both the primitive ceramic techniques and the fascinating method of processing and decoration that the potters of the time used in ancient Rome. The workshop will last a whole day and includes an exit to the local ceramic museum where we will observe the various archaeological finds found in the area, which we will reproduce in the afternoon. We will then take a walk in nature to collect the raw material, the clay, necessary for the creation of ceramic objects. Back in the laboratory, after a lunch that if you want we can do together in a restaurant near the laboratory where you eat all local products, I will teach you how to clean and make the collected earth suitable for processing, and then move on to modeling the clay. I will guide you in making small jewels or other objects of your choice by hand., I will explain how cooking with the primitive oven works, which we will simulate in the laboratory in my traditional oven. The next day you can go to collect the cooked items, or alternatively they will be sent to you.
